Stanley's stories are drawn both from his broad scientific background and from hobbies such as fly-fishing. Fishing trips to the west of Ireland, and the music of the local accent, inspired a novella (Fishing with Padraic) and short story (A Good Pull), both published in the literary fishing magazine Waterlog. On the strength of these, an anthology of short stories, A Bit of Irish Mist, was commissioned and published in 2005. A varied collection of short stories, Alexei’s Tree, was published in the same year.

For novels, see Books.

Two other short stories competed successfully for inclusion in published anthologies: The Cross (in An Anatomy of Chester, 2007) and An Interesting Case (in Secret Attic Story Book 2, July 2007).

Stanley lives in North Wales with his wife Paula, who is a physician (retired) and artist. They have three children, seven grandchildren and two insane cats. He is an accomplished modern jazz pianist, a competent photographer, and a moderate but keen fly fisherman. He continues to play an active role in the real world of research (see Academic site).
